Dmitrii Bobyshev (born 1936) is a Russian poet, translator, and an
emeritus professor of Russian language and literature at the Illinois
University of Urbana-Champaign. In 1959 he graduated from the
Leningrad Institute of Technology and worked for 10 years as an engineer
for chemical equipment. While a student he started writing poetry and
got acquainted with Joseph Brodsky, Anatolii Naiman and others. In 1979
he emigrated to the United States. In his poetry Bobyshev shows a more
radical dealing with words, just as had done the early Russian Futurists.
For his designs of this book, ‘Winter’, Goppe used colour lithographs as
illustrations next to collages with photographs. The title page illustration
depicting Malevich’ lithograph of ‘Game in Hell’ as well as the printing of
text on wall paper are an allusion to the early futurist’s books.
